Koh Chang is the last major group of virtually undeveloped tropical islands in Thai territorial waters.
The archipelago of Koh Chang is emerging as Thailand’s new luxury outpost, and has been hailed as the next Koh Samui or Phuket. With its chain of white sandy coves and beaches, pristine rain forests and abundance of wildlife and marine life, coral reefs, high mountain peaks, several scenic waterfalls, a rich variety of cuisine and great nightlife, Ko Chang is one of Thailand’s most sought-after holiday destinations.
Koh Kood is Thailand’s fourth largest island yet is virtually untouched. It has managed to remain an unspoiled slice of tropical heaven. Located in Trat Province, Koh Kood is the southernmost of the Koh Chang island chain. With gorgeous beaches and little other infrastructure, it is a resort destination that caters to those looking for a quiet beach paradise, with soft sand, crystal clear water, a rainforest, quaint fishing villages, coconut plantations and breathtaking snorkeling spots
At present, access to this little known island is limited, but within the next three years the island will have its own airport which will have a profound effect on land and property value. However, Koh Kood has already started to attract paradise seekers and property investors.
The recent opening of Soneva Kiri, the first luxury “Robinson Crusoe” style hideaway on Koh Chang, definitely puts the island on the map. Also there is a cutting-edge boutique resort offering designer homes for sale on Koh Kood, blending seamlessly into this natural splendour.
The Thai government has announced that Koh Chang will developed into the next premium beach resort tourist destination and vowed that they will not commit the same mistakes they made in Pattaya, Phuket and Koh Samui where resort development was not meticulously regulated and are infrastructural nightmares.
In Koh Chang however, the Thai authorities have imposed strict building regulations and directives for beach front developments such as limiting all man-made structures to a maximum height of three storeys. To control indiscriminate developments, the government declared 85% of Koh Chang as a national park and thus any developments are disallowed in these areas.
Koh Chang can be conveniently reached by car from both Bangkok and Pattaya and will thus become the playground of the rapidly growing economic power house represented by the Eastern Seaboard of Thailand, the area surrounding Pattaya.
